First Published: 1957 Rating: Excellent "One winter shortly before the Six Weeks War my tomcat, Petronius the Artbiter, and I lived in an old farmhouse in Connecticut." The Door into Summer runs at a faster pace than The Moon is a Harsh Mistress; it's lighter, cheerier, not as ambitious or far-reaching--and I love it just as much as Moon for those differences. This book was a pleasure to read. |

First Published: 2001 Rating: Average "Mostly out of laziness, I decide to start my low-wage life in the town nearest to where I actually live, Key West, Florida, which with a population of about 25,000 is elbowing its way up to the status of a genuine city." My senior year in college, I was part of the orientation staff that led a discussion on an excerpt from Barbara Ehrenreich’s Nickel and Dimed. This was the first I’d heard of Ehrenreich’s book, but the few pages I read intrigued me, and I was eager to read the entire book. By the time I finished the book, I’d learned that my eagerness had been sorely misplaced. |

First Published: 1997 Rating: Average "'God's death!' roared Elizabeth." Sure, it’s predictable and contrived, but Robin Maxwell’s The Secret Diary of Anne Boleyn is actually a good read. Not classic literature, but it’s better than Philippa Gregory’s The Other Boleyn Girl and The Virgin’s Lover. And it's shorter, too. |
