"It may be that after all this time, and after all that has happened, I do not remember that first time as it really was."

When The Dark Knight  came out, I was anxious to see it--not only is Christian Bale one of my favorite actors, but it was the last great work of Heath Ledger. I waited a few weeks to go to the theater, and all the hype made me more and more excited to see it, but when I finally watched the movie...well, it was really good, but with all the buzz I was expecting something much more. This pretty much sums up my reaction to Theodore Sturgeon's Godbody as well. Only without the "really."

But I think it's me. I really do.

Godbody is the story of a Christ-like being who comes to a small town and literally touches several of the townspeople with a message of all-encompassing love and compassion. Several of the townspeople do not understand his message and set out to destroy him--but others are transformed by his touch and try to spread his message to others. And that message is simple: love each other.

Sturgeon's novel, however, is not so simple--it's a complex work about what it means to love and be human and be alive. And I regret to say that I didn't get much out of the novel--far less than I expected--but I think that has more to to do with where I am in my life right now than any major failing on Sturgeon's part. I just didn't get the messsage out of it that other people seem to be getting.

I'm going to reccomend Godbody in light of this because I know there is something there within the pages that I could touch but not yet grasp. I'll leave it on my shelf and come back to it in a few years--perhaps then I'll be ready fo the message that Godbody and Sturgeon wanted me to find.
